The Postmarks - The Postmarks (2007)

Not too long ago, I considered a move to Miami (ready, Art Brut?). As live music scenes go, it ain't exactly the next Stockholm, let alone New York. Better known for club-oriented sounds, South Florida also turns out to be the home of the Postmarks, whose self-titled debut may prove to be one of 2007's most sublime indie pop albums. (Move over, Rick Ross!)

The Postmarks probably won't soundtrack many coked-up beach parties (duh, other than mine). Tim Yehezkely sings in a breathy inside voice, with echoes of the Softies' Rose Melberg, 60s pop singers like Françoise Hardy or Jane Birkin, and Brazilian Tropicalismo icon Gal Costa. Instrumentalists Christopher Moll (co-songwriter with the 24-year-old Yehezkely) and Jonathan Wilkins draw out arrangements that enjoy the urbane whiff of lounge, Burt Bacharach, Henry Mancini, and Sunflower-era Brian Wilson. Each track has that "turtlenecked Euro beatnik chic" that Pitchfork contributor Nitsuh Abebe heard in Broadcast's last record.

Despite Florida's relative lack of seasons, nearly all of the Postmarks' songs share the Lucksmiths' single-minded focus on the weather. Cats and dogs fall in "Looks Like Rain", but Yehezkely brims over with the thought, "A gray sky can't dampen my spirit." On "Summer Never Seems to Last", fuzztone guitar, theremin, and an organ out of the sadder-than-you-remembered "God Only Knows" all support the singer's pensive sky-gazing.

The most elegant song from the album, the horn-accented "Winter Spring Summer Fall", swoons and rotates with the seasons as a metaphor for the heart; "I'm fall, fall, falling for you," Yehezkely devastatingly repeats for more than a minute like the bookish niece of the Flamingos. The repetition here and on shorter, harmony-layered "Weather the Weather" (see?) would also seem to imply some familiarity with house music.

"Goodbye" makes sense as the Postmarks' first video, outshining the rest of the album's gorgeous sighs with a deceptively sprightly tale of a young woman going her own way, her "don't leave a key underneath the mat for me" sentiment coming across matter-of-factly against the movie-score brass. With Air's follow-up to 2004's Talkie Walkie still not due for a month, The Postmarks is the best album of its kind since Hercules' In the Alleyway later that year. All they need now's to rope in Pitbull for a guest verse.

Hisato higuchi - butterfly horse street (2007)

Tokyo-based guitarist/singer Hisato Higuchi has shaped an inimitable sound sphere of solitary electric notes that drape across his unearthly moan during the course of two full-lengths and an EP. Channeling loneliness and desires as elegant six-string tone poems, Higuchi has reached the heights of fellow travelers from Meredith Monk to Charalambides.

Though Butterfly Horse Street adds an unexpected snarl as Higuchi erupts into free/noise, wall of sound guitar style that echoes the most ecstatic string manipulation of Masayuki Takayanagi or Donald Miller (Borbetomagus). Ferocious and howling, Higuchi still paints desolation whether bleeding into the red or as hushed beauty.

"
I write songs for those who see the face of god in dirt and rust and broken things. for those who love desolation and who make of it ceremony and song. for those who bear memory's weight and who count the days of their youth in the blinking lights of distant radio towers and deserted intersections. who read in the crumbling names of towns on water towers the dispatches of passing seasons and forgotten heartbeats. for those who in dreams find great and unknowable mystery. who love words that sound upon their lips like secrets and sighs."

The Loose Salute - Tuned to Love [2007]

They sound as if they were hatched from the same egg that spawned Beechwood Sparks and Tim Bluhm and Jack Johnson yet they hale from England rather than California. With a sound that dwells somewhere between sleep and dream with references to other fine California acts like Jenny Lewis and The Watson Twins or The Mother Hips. Loose Salute is fronted by the soft spoken silky smooth vocals of Lisa Billson they definitly have a beach feel to them and a quick look over at their MySpace page shows them hangin out at the beach and apparently they actually surf.
Their debut album Tuned To Love is a delight. So far only a few listens into it I feel as if I have meet a new friend. Its worth a purchase for those who enjoy the sunsets and sand, the sound that envelopes a warm breeze. Even if you are half a world away from the Pacific ocean and the swells that drive those to surf like The Loose Salute you can still feel and breath the waves and lifestyle that we embrace here in So Cal.

A gift for all these T.REX archaeologists and british freakbeat lovers. This album is bassically the legacy of the six months or so that Marc Bolan spent with mod psychedelics John's Children in 1967, plus earlier 45s, and, finally, a random selection of rarities to what would otherwise appear a fairly standard track listing.

Jungle Brothers - Straight Out the Jungle (1988)

Yeah, 1988 one of my favourites hip hop years. Before A Tribe Called Quest & De La Soul there was another group that was reppin the Native Tongues. The Jungle Brothers where the first of the crew to put out an album. They got some conscious lyrics with some dope production. The beats really help them out cause they rap very mellow and they aren't the best mc's, but they manage to make some good music. The title cut is a classic song it's a good representation of their sound, there are many other very good songs on the LP. The song "I'll House You" altho not very good, it started the whole wave of those hip-house songs that flooded many rap albums from 89 to 91. The album is also known for introducing Q-Tip, he's featured on 2 songs. Overall Straight Out the Jungle is a dope album, altho not perfect it's an important album in the evolution of hip hop.

The Impressions - keep on pushing

Fun da men tal. Impressions forever!.

John Bush review:

Already a celebrated songwriter by the time of the third Impressions album, Curtis Mayfield introduced a political element to his material with the Top Ten hit "Keep on Pushing." An anthem of the burgeoning civil-rights movement (the 1964 Civil Rights Act was signed several weeks after its release), "Keep on Pushing" cemented his blend of gospel optimism with a relentless spirit of self-improvement. Though it was the only message song present, the album featured all the hallmarks of an Impressions set: impeccably smooth harmonies, the dynamic horn charts of Johnny Pate, and many more of Mayfield's irresistible songs (each with a clever spin on the usual love lyric as well as a strong sense of melody). "Talking About My Baby," the album's other big hit, was an adoring love song driven by a simple chorus and delivered by soul music's greatest harmonists. The simple ballad "I've Been Trying" was one of the most delicate and powerful the group had ever delivered, and the gospel march "Amen" became a Top Ten pop hit in early 1965 after its use in the Sidney Poitier film Lilies of the Field (for which Poitier became the first African-American to receive an Academy award). Keep on Pushing was the Impressions' first Top Ten album hit, and an excellent introduction for pop audiences just waking up to the inspirational power of soul music's finest group.

Magik Markers - Boss

When confronted with an example of magnificence in nature, such as a waterfall, Jane Goodall reported that the chimpanzees she observed were captivated, as if in awe of the beauty of the world. On BOSS, the Magik Markers have tried to capture the chimps' awe. A formality and restraint the Markers have never exerted on their previous recorded material is present on BOSS. Now the Markers are Jainists, with their mouths masked so as to not inhale even one tiny insect, here pursuing the killer gentle with a vengeance. Recorded in the cavernous dark of Echo Canyon West, with producer Lee Ranaldo working the boards like a diviner, BOSS documents the Markers with a previously unheard fidelity and orchestration. Idiosyncratic song structure and melodies interspersed with a destructive drum stomp are reminiscent of the early electrified blues of Junior Kimbrough, or the black hole rhythms of Kousokuya. Mixing a gentle vulnerability with a winded egomania, the Markers have always had a musical tunnel vision; BOSS is that vision made manifest. The tug of war the Markers enact, the way they are fully prepared to start yanking their world apart as they find themselves losing their place in, makes moot possibilities of greatness or mediocrity. It makes them unapologetic soothsayers with their ears pressed to the ground, waiting for footsteps.

With Peter Nolan, we finally hear what Lou Reed would have sounded like had he sallied with the drums instead of getting seduced by the easy praise of front man status. Like Rashid Ali squeezed into the Teutonic leather pants of Faust, Nolan drums like there are hell hounds at his heels but he just can't be bothered. Here both laconic and frenzied, Nolan's drumming arms reach out like an octopus's: tickling the ivories, humming the organ and blasting taps on some kind of endtime trumpet. As a pianist, Nolan reminds us that the piano is a percussive, beating out the whoomp of some old war dance, a bare foot-fall rhythm of fighters to battle and the heavy hands of a whiskey burlesque in the afternoon. Nolan is easy to underestimate, but finally, here is high fidelity record of the strange soul of one of America's most natural and quizzical musical minds.

In a 2005 interview in The Wire, Elisa Ambrogio said, "I want [The Magik Markers] to concentrate on music and focus inward, to concentrate on our own language of sound." BOSS stands as the Markers' first stab at getting to the meat of this ambition. Ambrogio is not easy to categorize. Nose deep in New England Calvinism and the brutality of nature, Ambrogio's lyrics are like a transcription of a drunk lunchtime argument between Lisa Yuskavage and Herman Melville. A guitarist whose notes form question and hatchet marks with equal measure, a musical humility to the point of ingratiation fused with all visible seams to grandiose self-importance speeds through her playing. With a mix of blues simplicity, an almost Sonny Sharrock wailing and a janky Americana punk reminiscent of Pat Place and Roky Erickson, Ambrogio avoids preciousness like a rash. On BOSS, a tent rises right out of the empty plain and we are thrust into a full blown revival show with no audience and no lights; it is just Elisa preaching, Pete blowing Gabriel's horn, and the mad wind of the prairie blowing all around. Fairfield Porter wrote that: 'Art does not succeed by compelling you to like it, but by making you feel this presence in it. 'Is someone there?...' "

Vashti Bunyan - Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind

Nina Simone - The Blues

Amélie - The Real Nature of the Fantastic Ice Cream Car

" The Meaning of 8 (2007)
The Meaning of 8 is scheduled for release on April 10, 2007. The album follows the progression of past albums and continues the evolution of the Cloud Cult message, along with an even more evolved Cloud Cult sound. With rich orchestration contrasted by acoustic and electronic drum beats, The Meaning of 8 is as diverse as the band itself. The liner notes offer insight into what The Meaning of 8 is all about, comparing religions and philosophies from around the world with Carl Jung's theories of universal symbolism and the collective unconscious.

Peter Case - Let us now praise sleepy John 2007

Yep Roc Recs. 2007
[Download]
pass: www.dancingmokey.com

"
In 2001, Peter Case produced an all-star tribute album honoring the music of Mississippi John Hurt, Avalon Blues, so with a title like Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John, it's not hard to imagine he's chosen to pay homage to another great country blues artist, Sleepy John Estes. As it happens, the album features ten new songs from Case (along with one traditional blues tune, "Get Away Blues"), and the album's blues influences are generally more a matter of approach and attitude rather than the adoption of any strict musical templates, but Case does follow the "less is more" approach of classic blues. Most of the songs feature just Case and his acoustic guitar, and the lyrics often dwell on bad luck and trouble as they manifest themselves in the modern world, from the multi-millionaire jailbird in "Million Dollars Bail" and the knocked-down street people of "Underneath the Stars" to the washed-up boxer of "Palookaville" and the big city malaise of "Ain't Gonna Worry No More" (which concludes with the spectral appearance of Lightnin' Hopkins at a local saloon). Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John suggests the lean musical structures of Case's 1998 album Full Service No Waiting fused with the storytelling sense of 1989's The Man with the Blue Post-Modern Fragmented Neo-Traditional Guitar, and the result is one of Case's most satisfying albums in years; as a lyricist, Case hits his targets dead on with these songs, and musically the Spartan arrangements favor the sturdy beauty of his melodies, and when he does bring in an accompanist -- Richard Thompson on "Every 24 Hours," Duane Jarvis on "I'm Gonna Change My Ways," Carlos Guitarlos on "Underneath the Stars" -- he makes their presence count. And if Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John is dominated by the realities of life on the streets in Big City U.S.A., Case also finds some genuine inspiration in the ineffable mysteries of life, and "Every 24 Hours" and "That Soul Twist" bookend this album with an unpretentious beauty and a simple joy in world that changes with every sunrise; this is a splendid album from a truly gifted artist. The Lionheart Brothers - Dizzy Kiss (2007)

The Lionheart Brothers features members of Serena-Maneesh and 120 Days and have been called "one of the most promising new bands in Norway." The five-piece play swirling shoegaze songs that fall into the "dream pop" category.

Lionheart Brothers are an extremely tight band that really seems to be arranging and orchestrating on a different plane than most young bands. Their sound and craftsmanship sounds decades old, in a good way of course. We're highly anticipating their stateside arrival.

"
The 22nd of January 2007 The Lionheart Brothers released their second album 'Dizzy Kiss'. Prior to the release The Brothers promised that their arsenal of sounds, melodies and harmonies would be even bigger, more improved and earcandy for every pop loving ambitious minded music lover! And indeed, we can not say the promise was not redeemed! The Norwegian press praised the album and it made nr 14 on the national top 40 charts! " [extract from the official page]

TMTR #3 - I-Brains, I holy Tape I

Lo hace de un modo impecable, con Adam Yauch (MCA de Beastie Boys) en la producción… hay amor en el sonido, y se nota: “I kind of felt like I knew the way they should sound -dice Yauch- because I grew up listening to them, going to see them when they first came up to New York from [Washington] D.C. and were playing CBGB and Max’s [Kansas City]. My feeling was that the ROIR tape [Bad Brains’ self-titled debut record, released on cassette only] really sounded right-a lot of the stuff after felt to me like people were trying to clean them up and make them sound more palatable for radio. So I guess I sat around thinking, ‘Man, if I could just get in there.’”

I-and-I-yo, I-blessings, Chavez iz tha new negus, Ras Chavez-I cristo negro, holy Emmanuel-I. Lo que faltaba.

TMTR #2 - FIve Girls of the 00s

Etc.

01 joanna newsom - clam, crab, cockle, cowrie 02 el perro del mar - sad 03 shannon wright - when the light shone down 04 feist - my moon my man 05 Lisa germano - after monday.

Ebullition Recs. #4. V.A - Give me Back.

1. amenity - machine 2. desiderata - upon a man looking at a woman 3. seein' red - bigot 4. spitboy - seriously 5. end of the line - burning down 6. man lifting banner - sister 7. born against - body counts 8. econochrist - seek to use 9. profax - patience 10. profax - bona fide 11. suckerpunch - religious phallos 12. sawhorse - spoke 13. sawhorse - farther 14. struggle - culture of rape 15. bikini kill - daddy's l'il girl 16. downcast - for in love.

TMR #1 Latinamerica feeds love series (Chili - Peru Issue)

01- Aguaturbia - Evol. From Psychedelic Drugstore, pysch-hardrock chilean heroes, recorded in 1969, the song says "everybody making love...", whatever.

02- Los Texao - Stone. Their second single, psychgarage from Arequipa, Peru. The sound is perfect: high and raw. Probably recorded in 1970, nobody knows.

03- Smog - Wiched Man. Another peruvian jewerly, hendrix-influenced hardpsych, with fuzzed guitars and hammond.

04- Zulu - Candela. Early seventies afro-peruvian- beats. You know, latin america, africa sounds together.

05- El Polen - Mi Cueva. Damn beautiful song. Hippie folk with a sweet andino sound.

05- Aguaturbia - Aguaturbia. The only spanish-singed folk-influnced song of these masters.

06- Panal - alma llanera. Latin-funk, that's all.
